Its no news that there has been an outbreak of the corona virus infection also known as Covid-19 and it is spreading at an alarming rate. While no cure has been found yet, which is reason enough to be concerned, a lot of people are not taking it seriously and this poses an even greater threat to human lives. Like it or not, the corona virus is real and these are critical times. The importance of good hygiene cannot be over emphasized.

It is also not enough for one person to be safe and take all necessary precautions, since the virus is easily transmittable through the droplets of liquids when sneezing, coughing or even talking. we all need to consciously put effort into staying as clean as possible.

The safety precautions are simple and easy to follow;

1 BE EXTRA CLEAN: Its been discovered that the virus can survive on surfaces for several hours, it is important to keep your immediate environment clean. Wipe surfaces as often as you can, disinfect and keep your space clean. It is important to practice good hygiene and even take extra steps in ensuring those around are clean and safe.

2 WASH YOUR HANDS: unfortunately this virus can also survive on the palms of the hand. It is therefore advised to wash your hand with soap and water as often as possible for about 20seconds and also use an alcohol based sanitizer. You can keep a bottle in your hand luggage anytime you need to go out.

3. PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING: this is not a time to hug people or shake hands. In fact, it is better to stay a good distance away from people at this period. You can practice all other forms of greetings just be sure not to touch others for your safety and for their safety. Once this phase passes, we can hug ourselves all we want.

4. BOOST THAT IMMUNE SYSTEM: while we hopefully await a cure, one important thing that will help is to boost your immunity. Eat healthy, take lots of fruits and water, avoid cold liquids, do not take alcohol or smoke during this time. If you have a medical condition you are managing, take extra measures to be safe.

5. DO NOT IGNORE THE SYMPTOMS: continuous dry cough, shortness of breath, fever, and high temperature are all symptoms of corona virus, and should not be ignored. If you notice you or anyone else is exhibiting these symptoms, kindly contact the hot lines and inform the appropriate authorities.

6. PANIC NOT: it is important to stay calm and not spread fear and panic. Educate people around you on the safety measures and practice them as well. Stay indoors as much as you can and even if you have to step out, follow the rules. Remember you are not only protecting yourself, you are protecting others.

Be your brother’s keeper

Do not spread fear

Stay clean

Stay safe.
