I took an evening walk about a week ago and I saw the signpost for a store, it read “DavRachVentures”. It was easy to decipher the meaning of the names, I’m guessing the “Dav” meant David and “Rach” meant Rachael, probably a couple doing business together, and while the name was a good combination of the names of both partners, I personally felt they could have come up with a better name. This brings us to what factors to consider when choosing a name for your business.
A business name is powerful; it’s the first thing people know about your business. It represents what you do in a just a few words. In choosing a one, you will not get a second chance, therefore it’s very important to get it right the first time. Whatever name you choose will stay with the business forever through several marketing and advertising campaigns, because of this, it’s advised to spend enough time carefully deliberating on the perfect name.
First thing you want to consider is making sure the domain name is available. Before you get too attached, check if it hasn’t been taken up by a similar business, because without a domain name you can’t have an online presence (and trust me when I say you need an online presence if you don’t want your business at a disadvantage). To ensure whatever name you come up with will be free, you have to be very unique in coining one.
This brings us to the second factor. Coining a unique business name that is not abstract is absolutely essential. Branding is the soul of a business and a name plays a major role in this aspect. You want to pick a name that speaks to your clients and explains what your business does without too many words. If you, as a business owner constantly have to remind people what you do, then the name hasn’t served its purpose. Take for instance the business name “cake culture”, the message is clear and direct, the business deals with cakes OR “1704events” it is clear the business is into event planning, so while choosing a unique, non-abstract name, ensure it passes the right message and has an image of its own.
Do not complicate the name. A lot of businesses in their attempts to use unique names end up complicating the name. The spelling and arrangements of the letters of your business name is very important. Choose one that is easy to spell and remember. Make sure you choose a name whose spelling won’t confuse your clients and remember to take it easy on the word play. For instance, your clients might have a hard time remembering if your business name is “shoesforyou” or “shoes4you”. Ideally your customers should easily spell your business name without being told how to spell it.
Finally, you have to consider the visuals. How the name appears on the logo, tag, label, website, branding materials and even on your business cards go a long way. The name of your business has to be in alignment with other essentials of the brand. It’s all part of the branding and will also be used to help with the Search Engine Optimization. You should Invest time, brains and money into choosing the perfect one.
